2014 DCL Final – Preview

[quote_simple]Glads vs Pokiris – 2014 DCL Finals!!![/quote_simple]

It is Championship Season!!! Championship Saturday dawns with a match most anticipated. No Team in DCL has anticipated this match more than Team Gladiators who had to wait one full year for a chance to make their dream come true. After last year’s heartbreaking loss to Falcons, Team Gladiators and their skipper has been doing everything for one whole year with only one goal in mind – Championship or Nothing!!! A quest to find a way to win the DCL Championship has consumed the Glads Skipper and his mates and to say that they are pumped up for the DCL Finals would be an understatement. T Ball’s biggest obstacle – The pressure to perform in the DCL Finals stand in their way while a resilient Pokiris team look to find a way to stop the dream of the Glads Skipper and his mates. A mouthwatering matchup awaits DCL Fans as Glads and Pokiris battle each other at DSP in the DCL Finals!!!

The 2014 Pokiris team has won three games in the Playoffs chasing a target and no matter how big the target, they have made the target look easy. They blazed past GLCC’s target of 105 and then made Indus’ target of 99 look like child’s play and then stunned the DCL World by thumping the Knockers with relative ease and impunity. Next up team Gladiators!!! The Glads on the other hand after opening the season with a 2-3 record have been on an absolute tear once they got their full team back as they have won the next 10 games with astounding margins as all 10 games have been won with bonus and then some. Many times Glads have won with bonus, double, triple and quadruple bonus if there was anything that was quantifiable as double, triple or quadruple bonus. Both teams are coming off very impressive semifinal victories and both teams are high on confidence. Pokiris have caught the imaginations of many in the DCL world with the way the poise they have shown in chasing down daunting targets down while the Glads unit put on a display against Bridges best of breed bowling attack and made that attack look toothless.

The DCL Finals will be called by Warriors Abhishek Rai and Falcons Sainath. It is an honor to be requested to Umpire the DCL Finals. If you cannot play in the DCL Finals then the next best thing that can be achieved is to be requested to call the all-important game. At this stage of the race only Umpires with proven track records and highest pedigree will be called upon to adjudicate the game and these two guys are best of breed and more importantly got the nod of approval from the management of both teams.

[quote_simple]
A quick preview of both teams shows the following:

1. Viju vs Ravi Narala: Both teams are led by Leaders who are legendary no nonsense guys. Both these gentlemen are not the best players on their respective teams but they are the best leaders of their respective teams. Both teams will not be the crème de la crème of DCL without their respective leaders. Both leaders are consumed, passionate and stubborn individuals. The Pokiris under Narala has gone from entering the DCL record books for conceding 219 runs to Glads in 2011 in their very first DCL match to being in the 2014 DCL Finals. That is a super quick turnaround from being horrible to being the best of the best. No Narala then the chances of Pokiris reaching the 2014 Finals is lesser than the chance of finding a man-made colony in Pluto. Ravi wins this matchup in a cricketing sense but the Glads skipper is one of the best when it comes to reading opponent batsmen and making in game adjustments on the fly. It is no secret that the Glads give much fewer runs to opponent teams when the Glads skipper is managing the team than when he is not on the field. The Glads skipper is legendary for keeping copious notes on all opponents and having a game plan for any batsman he has seen play. Every advantage that Narala gets from his personal batting and bowling skills will by and large get negated by the chess moves and countermoves that the Glads skipper will put in play. This matchup will end up in a draw.
2. Arjun vs Prasanna: Both can bat when needed to win the game on their own and both can bowl lights out. Both are the best players on their respective teams. AAA has more experience at this level as he has the best batsman awards from 2011, 2012, 2013, best bowler award from 2013 and the MVP of 2013 season next to his name and that should tip this matchup in the Glads favor – Advantage Glads.
3. Hari vs Shan: Both are the heart and soul of their respective teams. Hari has all the stats to prove that he is the far superior bowler while Shan has had several good innings with the bat to prove he is the better bat. Both are terrific fielders and both are team first kind of guys who will sacrifice an arm and a leg for their respective teams … This is a draw all the way baby!!!
4. Anoop vs Ravi Teja:These are the quiet assassins and the BIG-GAME Players for their respective teams. Any team in DCL will take Anoop with their eyes closed as he is that good. Every team that plays Glads is always worried as to what Anoop will do. Anoop will create lots of headaches for Pokiris but on the other hand Ravi Teja has been easily the best player in the DCL playoffs by a mile and then some. Ravi Teja has performed in every game and he has willed Pokiris to victory in every game and since the Glads skipper has never seen Ravi Teja play other than a few balls it will be hard to game plan for Ravi Teja and that bodes well for the Pokiris – On current form, Advantage Pokiris!!!
5. Ronak U vs Ranjith:This will be a showstopper as this duo will go all out for their respective teams. Ranjith has iron will and is a proven fighter and if this was a battle of wills then Ranjith wins this matchup. Ronak U on the other hand is one of the most exciting players in the league and has oodles of talent who has now learned how to harness his immense potential for the betterment of the team. RonsRons strikes fear in the heart of every bowler as every bowler worth his salt knows that one bad ball and that bad ball will be deposited outside the park – In the Semis Bridges Amit Koul despite his express liquid pace delivered two back to back bad balls and bang bang (pun intended keeping the Bang Bang movie in mind) the balls went for a Six and a Four. The slightest error by the bowler will see the bowler paying a hefty price. Advantage Glads in this matchup!!!
6. Glads Rest of the Gang vs Pokiris Rest of the Gang: Since both teams will not reveal their final playing 11 until game time, we shall do a generalized comparison. Glads have a better overall bowling unit as per DCL stats and it is generally acknowledged that Glads have best of class fielding of all DCL Teams. The Glads fielders are some of the best in business. Pokiris have tremendous resilience and to a man will not deviate one inch to the right or to the left of Narala’s commands so they have tremendous discipline. Glads on the other hand are known to have too much Masti and often are guilty of losing track of their plot and goal and that has been the bane of all their playoff aspirations – A lack of single minded focus on the task at hand has time after time derailed Glads from accomplishing their goals and objectives. Will that ugly trend rear its head once again on game day – The Glads skipper hopes that his mates have learned from their past mistakes and will be focused on the task at hand. If the Glads skipper cannot get his team to do that then this will be Game, Set and Match Pokiris else this will be advantage Glads. Since I am biased – I will give the overall edge in the “Rest of the Gang” matchup to Glads.

Some interesting facts in the Glads-Pokiris rivalry – Glads are 2-0 against Pokiris. Glads have always won the toss against Pokiris and elected to bat and have scored 219/5 and 147/7 in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Glads 202 runs margin of victory in 2011 is the largest margin ever recorded in the history of DCL. Pokiris are the only team that has lost the toss every time in the Playoffs and have successfully chased down the target set by the opposition. The only other team to win chasing every game they played until the finals was the 2005 Zups team and in the 2005 Finals BT who always batted first whenever they won the toss took on Zups who always chose to field and had chased down every target. In the 2005 Finals there was no need for a toss as everyone knew what was going to happen – If BT won the toss then BT was going to bat and if Zups won the toss then Zups were going to bowl. BT won the toss and chose to bat and won the DCL Championship also that year. On a separate note, Hariharan makes his sixth consecutive appearance in a DCL Final and that is a new record and if Glads win then Hari get to join Raghu Tadi, Binodh Singh and Harish Chava as the only 5 time winners of the DCL trophy.

On an all time basis – Glads have never lost to Pokiris. But this is the Playoff and Glads have never run into Pokiris in the Playoffs so this will be a totally different ball game. The Glads skipper will look to keep his team’s recent complete mastery of Pokiris intact. Can he? Well we shall find out in about 48 hours’ time and if the teaser above seems promising then why not come down in person to DSP (Drake Sports Park, Field #3)and watch these two teams go at each other with everything they have…. A mouthwatering matchup of a match made in cricketing heaven awaits one and all….

The game will be played at DSP – Field #3

This is going to be a very interesting and unusual Final….While Glads have been favourite throughout and even before the beginning of season, No one have thought of Pokiris making it that far … Not even when they won their last 5 games in regular season ( including one against Arsenal ) While Glads hold a terrific record against Pokiris in the past, the X-factor that Pokiris will bring in to this Final, will definitely keep Glads think tank itchy …. Pokiris are like that part time bowler who is on a roll and can't do a thing wrong ( like Youraj bowling against Pak in 2011 WC SF ) , And glads are like a batsman who, after scoring a century would fancy his chances to take on the successful part timer , but with some uneasiness …. Can Pokiris capitalize on that uneasiness and the X-Factor they bring in to this game OR can Glads overcome the anxiety of facing an opponent that they never thought of in the DCL Final …. This match up brings an unusual excitement to this Final. Though many would predict Glads to win but Pokiris may find more support among the crowd due to their unusual rise in the later stage of the tournament. It will be a game of nerves where patience will be the key. It is expected to be a contest b/w Glads bowling and Pokiris batting. Pokiris rely heavily on their top order and can easily get panicked if lose couple of early wickets. Glads will be desperate to make early in roads to get to the untested lower middle order. On the flip side, Pokiris can make Glads sweat and test their nerves, if they didn't lose more than 1 wicket in first 10 overs. I don't think Viju will be able to sleep with ease tonight and same may be true for Ravi : ) Reply

Rehan Bhai well said, I would like to add that Gladiators loosing finals last year has triggered / invoked the burning desire even more to win the DCL Cup badly and it will help overcome any atrocities during this game. Jai Ho Glads !!!! Reply

Falcons won after losing final the year before, glads can win like falcons Reply

I agree with Rehan Bhai, this is going to be a very exciting game. Pokiris best chance to win is by sticking to what they have been doing well, because Glads can play different style according to situation. Glads have look in trouble when chasing except against Bridges so confident Glads will be problem for Pokiris. Pressure on Glads and Pokiris will have all crowd support except many will want Viju Bhai to get dream of cup so crowd support can change according to situation. Arjun not yet perform like Arjun and If Prasanna has big game Pokiris will be winners. My pick Pokiris in tight game. I feel Ravi Teja or Prasannna or Shanmugam will click and that will be enough. Expect a great final like last year. Reply

The big moment is finally here. This is David Zachariah reporting. The weather is a bit chilly but much better than last week. The pitch looks decent and both teams are going through the motions. There is a slight breeze but otherwise the weather looks peachy for a good game of Cricket. I will be reporting the score on regular intervals on this page for the legions of DCL fans who cannot make it to the ground. Toss is yet to be conducted as the field has not been setup yet and the Umpires are yet to grace the occasion. There is a sense of intrigue and trepidation as to what the next few hours will unfold and both teams faces show visible tension as they await the great unknown….. Who will be the X-Factor today is very much open to debate but I just can’t wait for the game to get underway …. Here is wishing both teams a great game of Cricket for the most prestigious trophy in all of Michigan!!!!! Reply

Glads won the toss and in a surprise move decided to bowl …. Very bold decision by the Skipper and his mates and totally unexpected …. I guess first surprise of the Final Reply

It is indeed very interesting decision. If I am not wrong, Viju does not want to give chance to Pokiris to chase, as they are unstoppable when they are batting 2nd since playoffs, they have made score of more than 100 look like piece of cake, Viju cannot take that risk and would try to limit them to 50s to 60s max. Excellent Move.. Go Glads… Reply

All being said at the end of the day it was just poor umpiring. Starting from lbw all the way through wide's and run outs these umpires are missing every bit of basic cricketing, something that needs to be corrected fundamentally. A final game and every decision matters, the umpires must put their brains behind the game and stay focused. For example, for a run out decision the umpire must stand parallel to crease to get a better view of the ball and bat so that a correct decision can be made. Instead they are standing 4-5 steps behind the wicket and are making a call. Secondly taking hell lot of time for an lbw decision, and then giving an out. For sure if you are not certain the benefit of doubt goes to the batsmen. For an knick of the bat the umpire consults the leg umpire to see if there was a nick, this is one crap it never happens anywhere but in DCL. How can a leg umpire know about the knick from a bat. A win or a lose let the team fight for it and should not be because of poor umpiring. DCL please give a deep thought to it and make sure you have an open platform for good cricket. Reply
    • October 12, 2014
I watched the game and umpiring looked good to me with the human eyes they had.Anoop and maulik were given lbws,so calls were all called evenly called for both teams Reply
    • October 13, 2014
I agree with a few points that there are umpires who mess up certain relatively basic things. However, like a batsman always gets the benefit of doubt, I will give this to the umpires that because of lack of experience of situations they don't move appropriately to get into the right place (much like defenders ball watching instead of man marking in football/soccer). Having said that, I am not sure why people have a problem with the main umpire consulting the leg umpire. Considering that we are not professional umpires (who btw make a fair share of mistakes themselves), I see consulting with the leg umpire more as a way of acquiring more data so that he doesn't make a decision based on personal perception that even the leg umpire is skeptical off. I don't think it is impossible for the mail umpire to miss a nick that the leg umpire might catch, same goes for when the bat hits the ground and makes a noise. Of course it is to the main umpire's discretion whether to accept the opinion of the leg umpire or not, but as far as checking with the leg umpire is concerned, I really don't see any problem with that. In fact I think leg umpires should also look for LBWs for the length parameter as they have a great view (much better than the main umpire anyways) of the trajectory of the ball as to how high it goes. Also for when the ball takes a nick off the bat before hitting the leg, it is easier for the leg umpire to catch the abruptness to the ball trajectory than the main umpire who has solely sound and ball deviation, which can easily be missed as more often than not, the bat and pad will be very close to each other. Please email it to me or if there is a drop box account with a temporary password that I can access that will probably be best as the video file can be huge and email may not work. Revanth, when Ranjith bowled that No Ball that tied the scores, I was the happiest man on that field for I knew even if the game ended up tied we will win it from there and we had an entire over to score 1 run so tie looked like a very remote possibility and that was such a welcome sight from a Glads point of view which underlines my elation!!! Thanks a ton Revanth!!! I got the needed files and have downloaded them so you may revoke access to the drive as I am all set. You are a God sent and the pictures were fabulous and taken at the right time. I agree with you that the video you took – The timing on that or the way you panned that shot from the field to outside the field the timing like your strokes on the field were impeccable. I did not realize I was that elated but the video is priceless and represents 12 years of bottled frustration that was uncorked like the Champagne bottles that Maulik uncorked after the victory was sealed. Thanks a ton for the video as I will take the memory of the same with me to the grave. As one views the video one can compare and contrast the elation I had to the elation Hari had – For him it was his fifth for me it was my first. Clearly the first is always the sweetest. No wonder Arjun and I were crying after the win and the Glads team members were shaken as we wanted that win that bad. You would have seen 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th men there cheering the team to victory. It meant the world to us, many of us had put a lot of toil, hard work and sacrificed more than most can ever imagine possible. One unnamed player on an unnamed team fighting for a playoff berth in a do or die game refused to come to the ground as he felt the weather was too cold for his liking and sure enough his team playing I think with 10 lost the game, contrast that with the Glads team, in conditions that were downright miserable and inhumane, our 12th, 13th and 14th man were on the field throughout the Glads-Bridges game. I took time off from work and took vacation day every Friday before the PQF, QF, SF and Final (my son had major leg surgery 2 days before the DCL Final and yet I showed up and played the Final) so that I could just concentrate on my next opponent and come up with a viable game plan and not do anything that would let my team down due to a lack of preparation on my part (a lack of preparation on my part would be simply unacceptable)…. Now you can understand why I was so elated and so emotional as we had put a lot into the DCL Season to win it all and no sacrifice was too big and no price too high ….. We were there to play and win the game on the field of play. Hence that kind of emotion and elation over a No ball to tie up the scores!!!! Thanks for capturing this in such vivid detail. The timing as I said before was perfect. Reply

You’re welcome Sir! Haha, thanks. I didn't do anything as such, fortunately all the pics, videos came out well! I totally understand your emotions, and I agree with you that first is always the “Sweetest”. I think all the hard work and commitment has paid off in the end! You’re certainly deserved to be the Champions!!
Hopefully your son (David) will get well soon!

Hey Vijju and rest of Glads…………………….Many congratulations to be a DCL 2014 Champion. Viju…… you did it, all jinx are history now. I know that was your dream for long time and eventually it came true in 2014. This is all happened because of your consistency to run this team for this only goal.
Arjun again played a solid smart inning in a nerve breaking situation. You guys deserved it…………. I would like to congrats Pokiris also, that, how they started a few years ago and where they are now, huge achievement in a very short time without hiring a Hi Fi players from here and there. They are almost same team I saw from their start. Congratulations to be Finalist man….. Reply

Thanks Hamid Bhai. Yes the monkey is off my back finally. This time we have made sure that this monkey has been secured with a 2 ton dead weight and dropped it to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. No more Glads are the South Africa of DCL name tag. We can safely pass that on to the next team that has not won a cup. Thanks for the wishes and yes the persistence paid off as we came back hungrier than ever this year and we added the right pieces to make it just right. Arjun is Arjun ….. He has no equal …… he controlled the innings masterfully ……. the best pressure player in DCL shepherded the last man through the last 10 runs from 54/9 to 64/9 while never losing his nerve or belief in his ability to close out the game ….. It was nail biting and the pressure of the situation was unbelievable ….. Reply

Thanks Sameer. We finally did it. I expected this so I had taken vacation for this whole week 3 months in advance …… I was that focused and invested in this season ……. Almost went out of grasp but Lord was Lord and in his court he controls the outcome 🙂 We missed you man big time …… Just missed that fiery competitiveness ……. I am sure Knockers also missed your Phir Milenege dialogs 🙂 I got your back….. I will get you the 2014 DCL trophy one way or the other …… I will hold my end of the bargain come rain or shine!!!!
