2014 DCL Playoff Blueprint

DCL 2014 Playoff Bracket – Updated Oct 5, 2014

I got quite a few requests verbally seeking an expert prediction for the Playoffs. Let me start by stating openly that I am neither rooting for or against any team. The predictions listed are just my personal opinion and are not meant to discourage any team in any way, shape or form. If anything, I hope this will only help you to become better informed and motivate each team to perform better in the remaining games as teams make a final push for the 2014 DCL Playoffs. At the very least this should help you plan better and that is the only motivation so don’t start dissing me just because I had the chutzpah to make a prediction. Listed below is an educated guess on what I think the future holds and what may end up panning out in the next week. Teams in Red i.e. Bridges, Arsenal and Glads are locked into their spots and nothing can dislodge them from their spots. Teams with question marks next to them can move up or down the table based on 1 bonus point this way or that way. If E11ers win with bonus and GLCC lose without getting a bonus point then E11ers make it else E11ers are out. The equation is pretty simple for those 2 teams – GLCC and E11ers. In Pool B, an upset here or there will change the seedings. All teams with question marks are not guaranteed of any particular playoff spots and everything is in the air…. Take everything I have stated with a pinch of salt …. use it to motivate your team to perform better …. but for 3 teams nothing is guaranteed… most teams are guaranteed a playoff spot but where they land is very tough to predict as there are too many moving pieces…

Viju bhai,is Glads vs GLCC is a possibility?. If that happens, that will be the game of the playoffs Reply
    • September 8, 2014
That is a possibility but the more I think about this the more I am convinced Hurricanes are out no matter what happens and E11ers have to win with bonus else E11ers are also out and E11ers need GLCC to lose without getting a bonus point Reply

Warriors are playing with Indus. Reply

Sorry Abhishek I don't believe so. I know you want to play Indus and in your shoes I too would want that as the Bridges half is made up of Murderers Row and the difference between being at B6 and B7 is like night and day but I don't believe that is happening and I believe I got it right Reply

Yes , it’s Strikers. Doesn’t matter A or B , we have to win if we want to go to next round. Reply

What an end to the first round! Draws for certain teams due to rain while some other chose to play on alternate grounds on top of it few walkovers, few upsets here and there.. all Bollywood masala came together and we now have completely different setup for playoffs than what was predicted! This has to be the best DCL in last few years! Left half is surely the killer half! Knockers unless they goof up should end up in finals from the right half! As far as Left half goes keep predicting! @DhamakedarEnd – I have to agree with you. The Left Half of the Sweet 16 i.e. the Bridges Half is Murderer's row and it is going to be baptism by fire. No cake walks there. The Arsenal Half is the sweet spot of the Sweet 16. Our beloved Rai Saab has just made Murderer's row even more spicier by bringing his own unique brand of cooking to the mix. I am just waiting for the trailer for the Strikers-Warriors War game. As a fan I was disappointed there will be no Strikers-Warriors game this year but Upperwale jab deta hai tho Thappad Phadke deta hai!!! Wah wah bhai Wah!!! What a blockbuster match made in heaven given in time for DCL playoffs. I have to agree with my fellow Committee member Azeem Bhai …. best season ever in terms of competitiveness…. What can be more exciting than these two teams coming together to bash the others brains in the Playoffs. Rai Saab we need Minesh Bhai for this game. Hope you can use your influence to convey the dire need of his presence here. I hope he can make an express trip to give a "State of the Warriors rousing speech to the Warrior team before this key game. I think all of DCL is also waiting for the trailer. It should beat the anticipation for Dhoom 3 or Kick or whatever other movie had to offer and provide enough kick to the Aam Admi. I hope both teams will not disappoint us or kick us in the gut by giving so sweet, so nice, such lovely bunch of guys that I if I had known them earlier I would have made them best man at my wedding yada yada yada quotes. Please do not obfuscate the Aam Admi with "How Cute, How nice" hogwash. We want the real thing baby!!! Time for the "How Sweet" quotes has come and gone. Now it is time to bash the brains in. This is eat or be eaten time. This is the Playoffs and games are going to be 60 run games and every wicket and every run is more dearer than real estate in Mumbai or Manhattan. Something tells me this time around we are not going to see statements like how nice it was to have a game against Strikers and Strikers saying how wonderful Rai Saab was. If both teams know what is best they will bring their "A" Game and "A+" Attitude for this game and if the wounds of former times ignite the passions then so be it ….. Hell hath no fury like a Striker or a Warrior scorned and dissed by his former mates πŸ™‚ Reply

@ BT Fan – Looks like you have not studied hard enough for the exam. You are in good company as I was just like you till my 11th grade and you just had to name a subject and I flunked it – Reason I never opened my books and the books went on a joy ride in my bag pack from home to school and back. I have also gotten enough and more canings for that that are still visible as my Dad was as tough as it got. After 11th grade, I got serious and since then I have been jacking the curve and messing everyone else's happiness especially on tests that are graded on a curve. Those who studied in the US know what I mean by grading on the curve. I encourage you to go back and retake the course labeled DCL 301 – Advanced DCL Rules for tricky situations. In any case Sardar Dilip Patel who has passed this tough course has answered your question so I need not further issue another redundant clarification. In any case when you retake this course you will have good fun company as my buddy Rai Saab is also retaking that tricky course so all is not lost. In addition sorry to say this but you are no BT Fan for sure because BT fans are elated at this development. Regarding your question – BT guys are very smart on the field and even more smart off the field. They calculate all permutations and combinations and then execute master plans that others can not even dream of because such a great plan was not even conceptualized in most of our feeble minds. Last I checked being smart and thinking five steps ahead is not a crime and there is a game where you are rewarded for thinking 10 steps ahead and for meticulous planning – It is called Chess. Chess is played in all aspects of life, be it on the job front or on the field and guys who are meticulous are rewarded. Don't worry "Non" Bt Fan – Hope springs eternal and hope your real team and my team can solve this riddle this year else we can always say we tried but the opponent was smarter and executed better πŸ™‚ Reply

@BT Fan-Team with higher number of wins will get a higher rank when two teams end up with equal points and if both teams won same number of games then head to head will count. In case of Worriors and BT, Worriors won 8 games and BT won 7 games so clearly Worriors is above BT and head to head will not count here. Hope I clearify your doubt. Reply

How many umpires each non playoff team has to send?Any recommendation for best non playoffs team umpires for some important match ups? Reply

Two Umpires per team. It is very possible that some teams Umpires may not have to Umpire a single game and some may have to Umpire both games. At this stage of the game it is a honor to actually have the privilege of Umpiring a game. With both teams approving an Umpire before the game the controversies should be minimum. Shockers, Twins, Hurricanes have all assigned their best umpires they have at their disposal for the game so the team who is doing the Umpiring is not as important as who from the team is Umpiring the game. Playoff bound teams will be looking for Umpires who are calm, knowledgeable, understand Cricketing and DCL rules especially lbw’s and are willing to impose the rules. There will be plenty of appealing but it is important that the Umpires are not carried away by the strength of the appeals and decide more on the merit of the appeal. I can see both Hurricanes Umpires being put into service as both the announced Umpires are good. Reply

With the Playoffs around the corner, all Playoff bound teams and their respective Umpires should make themselves aware of the chucking tendencies of bowlers. Recently the ICC has cracked down on Chucking big time and banned players (including life time bans) for suspect action. Umpires have been authorized to call a No Ball for chucking and DCL has always stayed in line with ICC Rules on issues not discussed in the DCL Rule Book. ICC Rules Law 24.3 states that the arm can't straighten between the point when it passes shoulder height and the point at which the ball is released. Umpires who call games may want to check the Wikipedia article on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throwing_(cricket) As Malcom Knox stated in his excellent article for the Sydney Morning Herald, Tendulkar himself was done in by an illegal delivery that left the Master batsman shaking his head in anger. The Umpire in the game had no spine to call a chuck a chuck eliminating the possibility of a century in his final odyssey. The bowler since then had to undertake remedial work on his action while ICC clamped down with an iron hand on the chucking plague that is destroying and killing the game. Umpires have been authorized and encouraged to call No Balls by the ICC for illegal deliveries and I hope DCL Umpires calling crucial playoff games will have the moral courage and fortitude to take decisive action on Chucking that is nothing but Cheating in its crudest and simplest form. Are former players / non active players eligible to umpire the playoffs if they are in town ? like Shankar, Dr. Anand, Minesh, Chetan, Vijay Namburi, Goutham, Nittya….?, Will committee consider them ? Reply

The DCL Committee is fine with anyone Umpiring the Playoff games as long as both teams mutually agree to the Umpire in question. The DCL Committee wants the games to be called without bias and based on pure merit. The game has to e decided on the field of play. Teams have been given unprecedented latitude (never in the history of DCL have we given so much freedom or latitude) when it comes to who calls the game. We have provided DCL Teams with 32 Umpires when only 16 are needed for this round and for the next round 16 Umpires will be provided when only 8 are needed and so on i.e. we are providing twice as many Umpires as needed. If teams are still not happy they can go outside that pool and get whoever they want as long as both teams sign off on the same or even pay out of their pockets and get external certified Umpires if they want to go that route ….. Bottom line …. We are not entertaining Complaints after the game. Teams pick and choose the Umpires and they have to live with their choice. It is about as fair as it gets ….. I cannot think of a fairer process ….. DCL has come a long way in establishing gold standards….. Reply

This is going to be projected matchup for the DCL finals – Gladiators / Falcons Vs Knockers / BT… 50-50% Reply

Winning the toss in DCL still remains critical …. Case in point as 7 out of 8 teams that batted first won the game with the lone exception being GLCC being unable to defend 104 despite 104 being the highest score posted by a team batting first. That is an anomaly which is inexplicable!!! Reply

Dear Viju Wish you good luck for Finals, both my favorite teams Pokiris and Galdiators are in Finals. I wish both good luck and let the best team on that day win 2014 Championship. Reply

Thanks Sundar. I know your heart will be with Pokiris given that you played a game for Pokiris this year if I am not mistaken but I also know that we are your 2nd favorite team. It is shaping up to be a very good game and many in DCL are waiting with baited breath to see which team can come out on top and which team will adjust better. Even the Elite EP Analysts are split 50-50 on who will win this matchup (you really cannot count my prediction as it is a biased prediction). Both teams have bonafide stars and both teams have looked very impressive. There is bound to be more pressure on Glads than Pokiris but then Glads also have more experience and so it should be even-stevens. Hopefully the weather will be warmer than last weekend. Reply

Viju I wish you all the best for your finals match. In and out my favorite team for the finals would be Glads and I wish their long wait would be over by this weekend. For me apart from the finals another interesting thing would be how Dilip would cope up with this match as he has most of his friends in Pokiris team. Its not easy to bowl well against your good friends. I wish Dilip, team glads and team pokiris all the best. Reply
